The purpose of leadership coaching is to develop the skills in an executive so he can manage people, situations and crucial business processes effectively and profitably. While these skills are expected to be learned in business schools and universities, there remains the fact that almost all top CEO’s desire to continue to be coached even when they are at the top of their game. They realize that leadership requires continual learning, perspective and a bit of humility so as to stay sharp and remain at the top of their game.

A recent study by the Stanford Business School found that nearly two-thirds of CEOs don’t receive executive coaching or leadership development. And almost half of senior executives in general aren’t receiving any, either. Moreover, nearly 100 percent said they would like coaching they would like to enhance their development, as both Bloomberg BusinessWeek and Forbes reported in recent articles.

Leadership Coaching: Discerning The Facts

If you search, you will find that there over 100,000 books and texts on the subject of leadership and leadership coaching techniques. Moreover, thousands of research, scientific and academic articles, whitepapers and case studies attempt to analyze and clarify the topic as well.

Of course, there are many definitions for leadership. It fact, it is one of Mankind’s most misunderstood terms. Through my experience with my clients, as well as having lectured to over 10,000 business leaders in the last 20+ years, I do subscribe to a set of core assumptions in approaching this definition:

Leadership is about assessing the important from the unimportant and developing programs, policies and initiatives that will lead to greater security, prosperity, expansion and accomplishment along known goals. Leadership roles are those that facilitate execution of a company’s strategy and purpose.

Leadership Skills Can Be Taught

Leadership skills can be taught. This is an empirical truth in the world of leadership coaching. Just as people aren’t all born with the ability to become the next professional athlete, a top gun pilot, or a great guitar player, people are not necessarily born with the ability to lead. Different personal characteristics can help or hinder a person’s leadership capabilities. But most people require formalized programs and leadership coaching to help them develop their leadership roles, responsibilities and capacity. This is not to say that everyone can be skilled to the same level, but essential leadership skills are within everyone’s grasp.

Leadership Coaching Must Taught in a Positive Environment

Not all leadership coaching and development programs lead to building better leadership qualities. It is important to note that not all leadership coaching and development programs follow a standard among all coaches. There are almost as many approaches in leadership coaching as there are coaches. One of the most important elements in coaching is understanding that a positive coaching environment encourages learning, enabling skills that will endure for years to come. Realizing that coaching’s purpose is to foster better skills and higher performance, a coach will encounter bad habits and negative attitudes from some of the people that he or she will be coaching. Coaching must overcome these with not only powerful data, but must also be taught with the example of being positive and having great expectations for the future.
